In this video I am going to answer one of the most important questions that people ask me most often… Can a career test help me figure out the right career for me?
There are four things you need to know about career tests… so you can decide if they are a smart use of your time and money.
The first issue is that Career Tests questions are subjective.
A common question on a career test might be something like this… Do you make friends easily?
That seems like a simple question… but the problem is that people have different interpretations of what the word “friend” means.
Some people might define “friend” as everyone they socialize with.
Other people might define “friend” as only the people they are VERY close to.
All of the questions asked on career tests are interpreted differently by different people, and the career tests have know way of knowing how YOU interpret the questions
A second issue with career tests is that the answers are subjective.
Have you ever taken an assessment where they asked you to choose from an answer scale that looks something like this:
- I strongly disagree
- I somewhat disagree
- I neither agree nor disagree
- I somewhat agree
- I strongly agree
On career tests, the answer a person chooses depends on their unique interpretation of each of those answers.
All of the answers provided on career tests are interpreted differently by different people, and the career tests have know way of knowing how YOU interpret the answers
The third issue with career tests is that our answer to a question on a career test often depends on the situation.
Think about that simple question again… Do you make friends easily?
I don’t know about you… but the answer varies for me. In some situations it’s easy for me to make new friends. In other situations, it’s not so easy to make friends.
The problem with career tests is that they force you to choose one answer, but the reality is that for many people there isn’t just ONE answer. The answer often depends on the situation.
The fourth issue with career tests is they lump you into a group of other people based on your answers…. And they give you the same list of recommended job options they gave EVERYONE else in that group.
I don’t know about you… in some ways I’m similar to my family, but I’m also REALLY different.
So the fourth and perhaps biggest problem with career tests is they can’t give you a uniquely customized set of job and career ideas based on who you are as a unique person.
Here’s the bottom line…. Career tests don’t work because there is too much subjectivity and personal interpretation of their questions and answers… and they can’t give you personalized recommendations.
Based on my experience of working with hundreds of people who wasted their time and money on career assessments that gave useless career suggestions, I don’t recommend using career tests to find the right new career for you.
So why do some career coaches and career counselors use career tests with their clients?
The first reason is it makes a career coach’s job much easier. The career coach can give a career test to a client and simply read them the results.
The second reason career coaches use career tests is they get to keep 50% of the fees clients pay to take the career assessments. It’s an easy way for coaches to earn more money.
I don’t use career tests with my clients because they don’t work and they are a bad deal for clients.
