For me it was…
After graduating from college with a biology degree, I didn’t know the right job and career for me. A thoughtful family friend introduced me to an acquaintance who was looking to hire a medical sales rep.
So I schlepped a sales bag full of catalogues, kissed up to doctors’ receptionists, pretended the rejection didn’t bother me, and worked in a job that I wasn’t good at and had no real interest in.
I scurried through that career maze long enough to realize there wasn’t any cheese (e.g. personal and professional satisfaction) to be found there. No matter how hard I tried. No matter how much I pretended. No cheese.
I eventually escaped.
If you’ve done the same, congratulations.
End Chapter 1 of “The Great Career Story.”
How does Chapter 2 read?
If yours reads like mine – and many of my private coaching clients’ – it goes something like this…
You’ve busted out of the first maze only to find yourself still stuck on one or more career hamster wheels.
You have a better view of yourself and the work world now. Basics like your daily cheese might be less of a worry (in fact, your fear of having to start over again may be holding you back from making a transition).
Maybe you’re even running on a golden hamster wheel with shiny rims and leather interior, but it’s still an uninteresting hamster wheel… going round and round.
If you stop pushing yourself, the wheel grinds to a halt. The cheese stops dropping from above. The water bottle dries up.
What does Chapter 3 look like?
Great question. For me, I found my calling as a career coach who helps people to discover jobs and careers they will enjoy, excel in, and that will pay them well. For 10 years now, I have loved my job. I still can’t wait to get to work each day and help my private coaching clients.
Unfortunately, many people don’t get to Chapter 3 in their career. They struggle in a series of hamster wheels, wasting years or decades. Their entire personal life suffers for it, too .
But that’s not how your story has to end.
If you’re stuck in Chapter 1 or 2, let me help you get to Chapter 3.
